Special Metals Latest News (Aug)

Special Metals Latest News (Aug)

Special metals, also known as advanced alloys are continuing to shape the engineering world.

Here are the top stories for August 2016 regarding high-performance alloys, including coverage of latest developments and general updates.

Alternative Materials For Aerospace

In a report from Grand View Research (April 2016), it was highlighted that the Aerospace materials market is booming. The plastics market for the Aerospace industry alone is expected to reach almost $12 Bil by the year 2022.

Research Around The World

British researchers are currently using modeling techniques in order to develop new aerospace materials. State-of-the-art computer research is said to be cutting the cost of physical prototypes.

The methods of this research have also been used to tackle issues such as runway issues when taking off and landing, as well as the reaction of sandwich beams to stress. Researchers at the University of Michigan are currently looking into the vibration and noise problems linked to helicopters – custom embedded materials are being used to produce prototype blades.

At the University of North Carolina, research and testing is being performed of composite metal foam and armor plating for the use of military aircraft. The video below shows the metal and plating absorbing impact, stopping a bullet from penetrating.

Inconel 625 Characteristics And Applications

Inconel 625 Characteristics And Applications

Inconel 625

Inconel 625 is an alloy with fantastic corrosion resistance, with stress-cracking and pitting resistance properties.

The properties of Inconel 625 make it an excellent choice for sea-water applications in the Marine or Subsea industries.

Characteristics Of Alloy 625

  • Fantastic resistance to pitting
  • Resistance to crevice corrosion cracking
  • Properties that can withstand low and high temperatures
  • High tensile strength
  • Almost complete protection against chloride induced stress cracking
  • Good high temperature strength
  • High resistance to oxidation at high temperatures

Applications of Inconel 625

  • Marine Industry
  • Subsea applications such as submarine fittings
  • Aerospace and Jet Engines
  • Chemical and Food processing equipment
  • Filtration and waste water disposal or tanks

In mild environments: For fresh and seawater applications with neutral salts and alkaline media there is almost no attack present with use of alloy 625.

In severe environments: In corrosive environments that are challenging to other alloys, Inconel 625 is able to supply resistance to oxidising chemicals because of the combination of nickel and chromium within the metal.

High nickel concentration and molybdenum provides high resistance to non-oxidising environments.

The Ultimate Solution For Corrosive Environments

Our highly corrosion resistant Inconel 625 fittings and valves are manufactured in the UK and exported worldwide.
We supply many industries that require the fantastic properties of Inconel 625 for a number of applications.

Material Selection For Corrosion Prevention

Material Selection For Corrosion Prevention

Material Selection

Choosing the correct material for a fitting or valve is critical for engineers and metallurgists around the world. There are some key considerations for material selection, including suitability to the application use and environment.

Selecting a material that provides a solution for a high temperature or pressured surroundings is key to ensuring safety and efficiency.

selection of special metals for corrosion prevention.

Material Selection For Corrosion Prevention

Many of the environments that are considered ‘extreme’, require a careful material solution, rather than staying with our standard 316 stainless steel.

As much as our stainless steel material is extremely high quality, it may not be suitable for some areas where corrosion is a concern.

Corrosion Resistant Alloys

With so many types of corrosion present in our customer’s industries, material selection advice based on effectiveness is offered by Waverely Brownall.

Information on the types of corrosion and each materials strengths and weaknesses can be found on our special metals page.
