5 Common Types Of Corrosion

5 Common Types Of Corrosion

Common types of corrosion that are seen within industrial, marine/offshore and oil and gas include 5 main categories. These are what we will cover in this blog post, including suggestions on how to prevent it.

Metals that are attacked by corrosive substances are open to damage that can effect the durability and safety of the alloy. This is a huge concern for sectors of industry with environmental considerations. For example, within the marine and offshore industries, engineers will require metals that can withstand exposure to seawater.

Common Types Of Corrosion

1. Galvanic Corrosion

Galvanic corrosion will occur when two separate metals/alloys are in contact with each other. This type of corrosion will occur when

a) When metals are electrochemically dissimilar

b) Metals are in electrical contact

c) Metals are exposed to electrolyte

2. Uniform Corrosion

Irons and steels will corrode in ‘uniform’ when  exposed to certain environments such as soils and natural waters. Rust will appear in the presence of uniform corrosion.

3. Pitting Corrosion

Spots and pits will appear on the metal with this type of corrosion. It is a type of localised corrosion, which means that the attack is accelerated due to exposure of an area on the metal that an otherwise protective coating or layer has broken down.

4. Stress Corrosion Cracking

Unexpected sudden failure can occur with this type of corrosion. Attack of an alloys tensile strengths at high temperatures is a common situation for stress-corrosion cracking.

5. Aqueous Corrosion

“Aqueous corrosion is an electrochemical reaction of materials due to a wet environment, resulting in the deterioration of the material and its vital properties.” – What Is Aqueous Corrosion by Corrosionpedia.com

Corrosion Prevention

There are various ways to prevent the effects of corrosion. Each type of corrosion will differ in the prevention method.

However, generally, the selection of the correct corrosion resistant metal to begin with can prevent needing further treatments and prevention methods.

some prevention methods that need consistent updating and maintenance can be a hassle – both economically and practically.  An investment of a high-performance alloy will save much of this hassle.

It is very important to note that each corrosion resistant metal has its own properties and composition that will cope with some types of corrosion better than another.

This is why the selection of the right material is vital for cost, availability and most importantly – safety.

Material Selection And Advice

Corrosion Problem Solution
Galvanic Corrosion Avoid mixing fittings and valves wherever possible
Uniform Corrosion Limit or prevent this by an appropriate choice of alloy
Pitting Corrosion High resistance to pitting will be a crucial consideration point for any alloy
Stress Corrosion Cracking Avoid surface machining stresses. Stress cracking resistance needed.
Aqueous Corrosion Metals with fantastic seawater resistance Eg. Inconel 625

Corrosion Of Structural Steel

Corrosion Of Structural Steel

Structural steel is attacked from many angles, fast changes in the atmosphere due to weather is one of the biggest challenges facing steel.

Luckily, in many modern and even historical projects, this is a challenge that can be faced at the outset of design and production. In fact, some of the very first largely pure iron structures such as the Coalbrookdale bridge have survived weather changes for 200 years.

Corrosion Of Structual Steel: Prevention And Considerations

Recognising the level of corrosion in the environment in which a metal is to be used is the key to preventing disasters.

High performance treatments of the alloy or consistent maintenance may be required in some circumstances.

The design of a large structure will influence its ability to withstand corrosive environments as much as post-building treatments.

Avoidance Of Corrosion

Examples of the considerations in structural design include:

  • The ability to easily access and apply the required maintenance and alloy treatments to the structure – sometimes this includes over night maintenance.
  • Elements within the structure to help with drainage issues Eg. Heavy rainfall that is not drained away quickly will cause more wearing than rain water that can fall from the building fast.
  • Places in which a structure may catch debris must be considered to avoid debris build up that will, overtime, effect the steel on which it sits.

General advice on the correct application of steel and steel used for structural projects can be found in BS EN ISO 12944-3.

The BSI Group offer advice on design considerations and the use of protective materials to be used on external areas of a steel structure.

Corrosion Resistance For Industrial Environments

Waverley Brownall manufacture instrumentation for industrial environments in special metals to provide the highest corrosion resistance possible.

Our fittings and valves are used in some of the most extreme environments in terms of atmosphere, temperature and acidity. This includes chemical processing plants, nuclear generation and the petroleum industry.

Because of these incredibly corrosive situations, the alloys we use in our manufacturing need to possess the highest performance possible.

Some of these special metals include: Monel alloy 400, Hastelloy C276, Titanium and Incoloy 825.

Even our standard material, 316 stainless steel is suitable for a number of environments within oil and gas and pipeline structures.

Corrosion resistant metals for fittings and valves are available to order from Waverley Brownall today.

How To Choose The Right Superalloy

How To Choose The Right Superalloy

What is a Superalloy?

Superalloys, also known as high-performance alloys are metals with properties of strength and intense durability. This includes aspects of temperature and environment, such as seawater corrosion or internal corrosion from acidic substances.

In this blog post you will find out how to select the best alloy for your intended use.

4 Steps To Selecting The Best Superalloy

1. Research

Research is a crucial stage in selecting the right alloy for an application. You should take time to browse the market of alloys that are available for the intended use.

Helpful documents and downloads on each alloy type can be found on Google , or you can use other sources such as our special metals page.

2. Weigh up the considerations

  • Availability of the alloy or fitting/valve in the superalloy
  • Pricing – This should include maintenance costs, installation and training if necessary
  • Properties of the special alloy – *Forming a table that weighs up the Pros and Cons of each alloy will help you to determine which is best. Eg. To easily see where one type of alloy out-performs another on applications of high temperature.
  • Intended use – Where will you be using the fitting or valve in the exotic metal material? Are issues of corrosion, temperature and atmosphere an issue?

3. Find a reputable supplier

GET A QUOTE

Finding a reputable supplier (or manufacturer, especially for bespoke products) is our third step. This step takes you further towards the enquiry stages of a purchase but it is important to know what to look for when judging your options:

  • Where is the company based?
  • Location may be a key consideration for delivery depending on the urgency of your order.
  • Do they have recognisable badges visible on their website?
  • If you scroll down to the bottom of our website, you will see two badges for our LLoyds Approval and ISO approval. Beware of websites without any badges or visible accreditation.
  • Have they supplied other reputable companies?
    • As an example, on our homepage you will see we have supplied the likes of Shell, BP and ConocoPhillips. It is important to determine the legitimacy of expertise when it comes to Superalloys. Accidents within industries such as Oil and Gas from faulty products or metals can be devastating.
  • Certifications of materials – Can the company you wish to buy from provide certifications of material type?
  • We provide PMI (Positive Material Identification) testing for all of our metals, including Hastelloy C276, Titanium, Stainless Steel and Incoloy.

4. Seek expert advice

To ensure you are selecting the right alloy, it is always a good practice to contact a professional for advice.

We advise these two options:
