An Introduction To Monel 400 (UNS N04400)

An Introduction To Monel 400 (UNS N04400)

Monel 400 for Valves, Pumps and Fittings

Monel was first formulated in the 1900s and ever since has proved to be a vital choice of alloy for engineers throughout the world.

This nickel-copper alloy is perfect for valves, pumps, shafts, fittingsand other instrumentation.

This is because it holds excellent resistance when faced with corrosive substances.

It also has an all-round high strength when working in a range of media including sea water and sulfuric acid.

Alloy 400 Proves A Powerhouse In Many Industries

Energy and power are essential to everyday living, and so by default, so is the oil and gas industry.

The UK’s network of gas distribution is used to heat our homes during winter and the work of offshore rigs supplies vital fuels for our everyday transport.

Did you know that the oil and gas industry provides more than 70% of the UK’s total primary energy?

Monel 400 is an alloy used frequently for applications with petrochemical substances, petroleum and gasoline thanks to its powerful properties.

Not only does it provide a benefactor of strength and durability to these industries, but it is also a great choice for aircraft, pulp and paper, and the marine sector.

Forms Available

Tubing (Alloy 400)

Tube Fittings (Elbows, hose couplings, compression fittings, tees and more)

Valves (Used for flow control with high or low pressures)

Monel 400 Ball Valves

This high-performance alloy is a fantastic choice where atmospheric corrosion is an issue. Alloy 400’s resistance thrives in areas where it comes into contact with seawater particularly, making it popular within the Marine industry.

Applications Of Alloy 400

  • Resistant to seawater corrosion
  • High resistance to a number of acidic substances
  • Popular within the oil, marine and pump manufacturing industries
  • Monel 400 is sometimes overshadowed by the other wide range of modern nickel iron chromium alloys but is worthy of consideration for many applications
  • Overall strength and toughness makes Monel 400 a great choice for durability
  • Our flow control ball valves are available with pressure ratings of 1000, 3000 and 6000psi pressure rating

MONEL® Alloy 400 Properties

Monel 400 is best known for its resistance to corrosive environments. Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy that is widely used for its impeccable strength and durability.

The alloys resistance to seawater and brackish water (salt and fresh water mixed together), makes it a fantastic choice for marine and offshore operations.

This alloy is also particularly resistant to hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids once deaerated.

Other common uses of alloy 400 are:

  • Valves, pumps, shafts and instrumentation
  • Chemical processing equipment
  • Marine engineering applications
  • Crude oil applications
  • Flow and seperation
  • Process vessels and piping
