3 Types Of Control Valves You Need To Know

3 Types Of Control Valves You Need To Know

In this blog post we will be covering 3 common types of control valve: Double Block and Bleed, Manifolds and Ball Valves.

1. Double Block And Bleed Valves

Double Block & Bleed Valves provide primary isolation when directly mounted onto process pipework.

Key features:

· Floating ball valve assembly

· Heavy duty needle valve assembly

· Forged one-piece body for superior grain flow

The single units of these valves are often used for applications where complete certainty of shut-off is needed. Sometimes, areas where space is limited, a valve will need to be not only effective, but compact in size, which is another positive of singular unit.

API flanges are available up to an impressive 10,000lbs for inlet unit valves.

Standards: Gas Pressure Testing to BS 6755 Pt 1, Fire Safe BS 6755 Pt 2, ANSI / ASME B16.34, ANSI / ASME B16.5, Material certification EN 10204 3.1b can be provided on request for all materials including stainless steel, Hastelloy C-276 and Monel 400.

2. Manifold Valves

Manifold valves are a type of control valve that is able to isolate and control the flow of media within a system. 2 way, 3 way and 5 way manifold valves are extremely adaptable instrumentation valves. They are designed to replace multiple unit assemblies for reducing leak points, as well as space-saving thanks to their compact form.

Hydraulic manifold valves are used in applications to regulate the flow of media between pumps and actuators.

For those who may be interested in the growth and trends aspect, below is an interesting article by DK-LOK HQ regarding the market of ball valves and manifolds.

3. Ball Valves

Ball valves are a type of control valve that are excellent for shutoff applications.

Key features

· 1000, 3000 and 6000 psi rated ball valve ranges as standard

· Up to 10,000 psi rated on request

· Colour coded handles and cast coded bodies for easy replacement and installation

· Compact and reliable

· Long service life (est) 15 years+ for well-maintained stainless steel

Pressure VS. Temperature

Air flow and water flow pressure drop charts can be seen in our precision valves catalogue for your reference. Tested for pressure drop vs. flow (GPM) and pressure vs. temperature performance include sizes ¼”, 3/8”, ½” and 1” ball valves.

The temperature rating as standard for our ball valves is -45 – 230C of up to six thousand psi safe working pressure.

The Issue Of Corrosion Resistance

Corrosion resistant valves are manufactured from materials (alloys) with special properties. The properties of high performance alloys such as Hastelloy, Titanium and Inconel 625 are perfect for coping in corrosive environments. The effectiveness of the valves resistance relies primarily on the perfect choice of alloy. We offer free advice from our engineering team for choosing the correct material of manufacture for the application you may need.

Precision Pipe Fittings Up To 6000 PSI

Precision Pipe Fittings Up To 6000 PSI

Precision pipe fittings are used in areas where high temperatures and safe working pressure capabilities are needed. Often referred to as instrument pipe fittings or precision instrumentation, these fittings are manufactured from the material stainless steel.

Precision Pipe Fittings For Industrial Application

There is a big difference between pipe fittings used for industrial applications vs. general use. For example, pipe fittings that are manufactured in weaker or cheaper materials such as brass are often used in plumbing applications.

Due to the severity and corrosive nature of the industrial applications for our pipe fittings, stronger materials are used as a standard. Grade 316 holds general corrosive resistance and has been used extensively for the supply and control of UK gas.

Variety Is The Spice Of Life

Pipe Threads

On all instrument pipe fittings, different thread types can be found. We offer a wide range of thread types, from NPT, BSP and NPTF. Alongside the supply capability of many different sizes, this enables for an even broader range of use.

Working Pressure

Waverley Brownall have a high pressure range that can cope with pressures up to 6000 psi. There is also a low pressure pipe fittingrange, which is a cast range at 150lb class that consists of 90 and 45 degree elbows, equal tees, nipples, adaptors and plugs.

Sizes

Sizes range from 1/8″ to 2″ on the majority
of our stainless steel pipe fittings.

Common pipe fitting sizes are 1/8″, 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″, 2″

Plugs, Bushes and Seals

Instrumentation Safety

The safe working pressure of pipe fittings and components for industries such as oil and gas are also maximised where possible. High pressure pipe fittings will thrive in areas of elevated temperature and even where corrosive media is present.

All stainless steel 316 fittings benefit from our cast coded system for easy tracing. After years of service, lower quality instrument pipe fittings may become worn. Unmarked or worn fittings are a huge problem for engineers working with the piping systems.

When replacement or maintenance is needed, the manufacturer or material of the fitting may not be able to be identified. This is a big risk factor that must be considered, especially since interchanging fittings on the same application can be incredibly dangerous.
