Alternative Materials For Aerospace
In a report from Grand View Research (April 2016), it was highlighted that the Aerospace materials market is booming. The plastics market for the Aerospace industry alone is expected to reach almost $12 Bil by the year 2022.
Research Around The World
British researchers are currently using modeling techniques in order to develop new aerospace materials. State-of-the-art computer research is said to be cutting the cost of physical prototypes.
The methods of this research have also been used to tackle issues such as runway issues when taking off and landing, as well as the reaction of sandwich beams to stress. Researchers at the University of Michigan are currently looking into the vibration and noise problems linked to helicopters – custom embedded materials are being used to produce prototype blades.
At the University of North Carolina, research and testing is being performed of composite metal foam and armor plating for the use of military aircraft. The video below shows the metal and plating absorbing impact, stopping a bullet from penetrating.
