Hastelloy C-276 Alloy from Haynes International Inc.
With over 8 plants around the world, Haynes International Inc. is a huge manufacturer of corrosion resistant and high-temperature alloys. These high performance alloys give many industries a much needed solution for otherwise destructive environments. Hastelloy is a trademark name of Haynes International.
The alloy Hastelloy C-276 is one of a whole range produced by Haynes, and is part of our special metals choice for tube fittings, pipe fittings and valves.
Hastelloy C-276 Alloy: Application and Use
Metals that do not hold the correct coping properties and make-up would corrode and be unsafe for certain engineering applications.
The Hastelloy C-276 alloy holds corrosion resistant elements that allow it to flourish where other metals fail. The effective survival of Hastelloy C-276 makes it a great choice of alloy for nuclear reactors, distillation equipment and uses in the chemical industry.
Fabrication: All common methods of welding can be used with Hastelloy C-276, except for the oxyacetylene process. This alloy tends to work-harden, but it can be successfully deep-drawn, spun, press formed or punched.
Note: Precautions should be taken to avoid excessive heat input. This is a very important warning featured and advised by Haynes International Inc.
Hastelloy C-276 Alloy: Availability
Alloy C-276 is from a group of ‘Hastelloy’ metals. Alloy C-276 is also known as: Hastelloy C, Inconel C-276.
Hastelloy C-276 is available from Waverley Brownall in the form of raw material, bar, forgings, high and low pressure pipe fittings, tube fittings, flanges and valves. We can also provide you with bespoke solutions in Hastelloy C-276. Email enquiries@waverleybrownall.co.uk for more information.
Corrosion Resistance And High Performance
Hastelloy C-276 alloy is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy that is considered as high-performance for its resistance to corrosive surroundings. It resists formation of grain-boundary precipitates in the weld head-affected zone. This is what makes Hastelloy C276 suitable for the majority of chemical processing applications.
It is not only the chemical industry that has discovered the strength and value of this Hastelloy material. It is also used in the following industries; Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, Water Desalination, Oil and Gas and Nuclear Power.

C-276 is one of the few materials capable of coping with the corrosive attack of wet chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide solutions and hypochlorite. It is also suitable for marine and seawater applications. Hastelloy C-276 alloy is almost unmatched when it comes to seawater resistance – this is especially true under crevice conditions.
These conditions would induce attack in other commonly used materials such as 316 stainless steel, 6MO stainless and even Monel alloy.
Features and properties:
- High corrosion resistance
- A good choice of alloy for a huge range of applications
- Available in pipe fittings and bar
- Resistance to localised corrosion Eg. Stress corrosion cracking
- Can withstand the corrosive effects of wet chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide and hypochlorite
- Considered one of the most versatile high-performance alloys
- Copes well with: acetic anhydride, seawater, ferric and cupric chlorides
- Used for heat exchangers, evaporators and reaction vessels
- Excellent resistance to sulphur compounds
