The high-performance alloy Monel 400 has a long history of use as a corrosion resistant material. This alloy is available in the form of compression tube fittings and valves as part of our Special Metals range.
Common trade names include alloy 400, UNS N04400, Monel alloy. Monel® is a registered tradename of Special Metals Corporation.
The Monel group of nickel alloys are composed of up to 67% nickel, copper, mixed with small amounts of iron, silicon, carbon and manganese. Monel was originally created by Chief Metallurgist David H. Browne for International Nickel Co, named after company president Ambrose Monell.
Monel 400 Properties
This nickel-copper alloy can cope brilliantly with alkaline, salts and hydrofluoric acid. Monel 400 brings a mix of excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in fresh water. It also gives a strong resistance performance in areas of reducing environments and chloride ion stress cracking.
For all of its strengths, Monel 400’s hydrochloric acid resistance will decrease significantly in the presence of oxidising salts.
Monel 400 Applications
With good thermal conductivity and high strength, alloy 400 is often used within a range of industries.
Suitable areas of use for the Monel 400 alloy include marine engineering, heat exchangers, valves and pumps. It will provide fantastic resistance in rapidly flowing seawater.
- Aerospace construction
- Oil production and refining

Monel 400 Tube Fittings
Waverley Brownall currently hold moderate stock in a wide range of compression tube fittings in Monel 400. Raw material is held to readily manufacture for bespoke solutions and special requests.
Tube fittings are available in both single and twin ferrule OD sizes, imperial and metric, with the most common thread types.
Our standard sizes for tube fittings in Monel 400 are up to 1” or 25mm tube OD sizes.
Considerations for bigger sizes will be made on orders that require large quantities.
Forms of Monel 400 tube fittings: Elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, couplings and more. These fittings will be roughly 4 times the price of our standard stainless steel material.
Monel 400 Tube
Our most popular tube length is 3 metres. Please note that tubing in special metals such as Monel 400 will have a longer lead-time than our standard stainless steel 316 tubing. Tubing in alloy 400 will give high corrosion resistance within various marine applications.
Recommendation
Waverley Brownall recommends for all customers to ensure the material of their application or system is consistent. In regards to Monel, we are able to provide you with alloy 400 compression fittings, pipe fittings, valves and tube. Galvanic corrosion will be an effect of two varied materials in contact, causing deterioration and failure. Material compatibility is important for the Health and Safety of any intended application.
Please consider the internal media and surrounding environment in which your fittings, valves and tube will be exposed to before making a purchase. Industries such as Chemical and Offshore will have the correct regulations to follow for ensuring correct material selection.
Interchangeability
Waverley Brownall tube compression fittings, valves and pipe fittings are not compatible with other manufacturer brands, including Swagelok and Hoke. Fittings and components are not to be interchanged under any circumstances, with major concerns to Health and Safety policies.
